ABOUT THE PHOENIX

The phoenix is a bird rooted in the mythology of many cultures.  In the Hans Christian Andersen tale, he was the first bird born under the first rose bush that grew beneath the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Paradise.  When Eve plucked the fruit of the tree, she and Adam were driven from Paradise.  From the flaming sword a spark fell into the nest of the bird, and it blazed up.  The bird perished in the flames but from the red egg in the nest there fluttered aloft a new bird, the solitary Phoenix.

In ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Arabian mythology, the Phoenix' nest was used as a funeral pyre.  The old Phoenix was consumed in flames and burned to ashes.  A new Phoenix would rise from the funeral pyre.  Depictions have also appeared in ancient Hindu and Chinese art and writings.  In Chinese tradition, the Phoenix ("si ling" and "feng-huang")) represents good luck, loyalty and honesty, decorum, justice, and high moral values.  It is a sign of both peace and disharmony as well as the union of Yin and Yang.  It later appeared in medieval Christian writings. The Native American Thunderbird and the Arabic Roc also evolved from the Phoenix.

The Phoenix has come to symbolize immortality, resurrection, and life after death.  The flight of the mythological Phoenix was said to represent the capacity to leave the world and its problems behind as well as a rebirthing from its own ashes.
